The Background & The Cause
Nourish Community Foodbank provides emergency food supplies and support to individuals and families in crisis across Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, and the surrounding areas. As the cost-of-living crisis pushed demand for foodbank services to record highs, Nourish’s digital presence needed to evolve to handle the increased operational load.
A foodbank website is a lifeline that serves three distinct, critical audiences:
- People in Crisis: Individuals needing immediate, clear instructions on how to access food support without barrier or stigma.
- Referral Agencies: Social workers, health visitors, schools, and advice centers submitting urgent client referrals.
- The Community: Local residents and businesses looking to donate food, give money, or volunteer.
Nourish partnered with Step3 to transform their website into an intuitive, vibrant, and accessible hub capable of serving all three groups seamlessly.
The Challenge: Removing Friction in Times of Crisis
When a family is facing hunger, every minute counts. Nourish’s legacy digital setup created operational bottlenecks for both the team and external support networks:
- Cumbersome Referral Processes: Frontline agencies faced a slow, manual process to refer clients, delaying food parcel dispatches.
- Cluttered User Journeys: Information on how to get help, find food drop-off locations, or donate money was buried beneath complex page structures.
- Outdated Visual Identity: The old design failed to convey the warmth, dignity, and vibrant community spirit that defines the Nourish team.
Nourish needed a modern platform that balanced deep human empathy with rigid operational efficiency – speeding up referral times while making it effortless for the community to donate.
The Solution: Empathetic UX & a Custom Agency Referral System
Step3 collaborated closely with the Nourish team to map out clear, dignified user journeys across the entire site.
Digital Agency Referral Engine
The cornerstone of the new website is a custom-built, secure Agency Referral System. Frontline professionals (such as Citizens Advice, NHS staff, and social services) can now complete and submit verified client referrals online in seconds from a phone, tablet, or desktop. This automated workflow routes crucial details directly to the Nourish warehouse team for immediate dispatch, cutting out hours of manual paperwork.
Action-Oriented Navigation
We restructured the site architecture around clear primary actions:
- I Need Help – Clear, compassionate guidance on how food parcels work and how to get a referral.
- Give Food – An interactive, regularly updated “Food Wishlist” and interactive map showing local drop-off collection points.
- Donate Money – Frictionless integration for one-off and recurring financial contributions.
Vibrant, Accessible Design
We created a bright, modern, and uplifting design language that reflects Nourish’s positive impact on the community. High accessibility standards were baked into the design to ensure the site is easy to navigate for users of all abilities, on any device.
The Impact: Faster Relief for Families in Need
The new website transformed Nourish’s digital presence from a basic information page into an active operational asset:
- Accelerated Food Delivery: The streamlined agency referral form drastically reduced processing times, getting emergency food parcels into the hands of vulnerable families much faster.
- Reduced Administrative Burden: Automated digital forms eliminated hours of manual data entry for staff and volunteers, freeing up time to focus on frontline support.
- Increased Community Giving: Clear, mobile-friendly pathways for food drop-offs and financial donations made supporting the charity easier than ever for local residents.
Step3 continues to support Nourish with secure hosting and proactive maintenance, ensuring their site remains fast, reliable, and ready to serve the community whenever crisis strikes.
