The Background: From Technical Support to Strategic Redesign

Aimes creates revolutionary, immersive art experiences designed to engage audiences, provoke thought, and push creative boundaries. However, their digital presence wasn’t living up to the caliber of their work.

Aimes initially approached Step3 for targeted technical support. Their legacy website was plagued by persistent bugs, performance glitches, and backend usability issues. As our team began resolving these immediate quick-fix technical problems, a deeper issue became clear: the site’s underlying architecture and visual design were actively working against them.

The existing layout was overly complex and cluttered, making it difficult for visitors to understand the scope, meaning, and narrative behind Aimes’ artistic installations. Rather than continuing to apply band-aids to a flawed foundation, Step3 worked with the Aimes team to plan a complete, strategic website redesign.

The Challenge: Balancing Complex Narrative with Radical Simplicity

Designing for creative brands presents a unique UX challenge. When the subject matter itself is complex and avant-garde, the digital wrapper cannot compete for attention.

The old website suffered from a common trap: trying to explain complex art through dense, cluttered page structures. The primary challenge for Step3 was to completely re-architect the site so that Aimes’ multifaceted projects could be easily understood without diluting their artistic integrity.

We needed to create a platform that felt:

  • Visually Arresting: Giving high-resolution photography and media the room to breathe.
  • Radically Simple: Eliminating unnecessary UI clutter and complex navigation pathways.
  • Effortless to Navigate: Guiding curators, collaborators, and visitors intuitively through their portfolio of work.

The Solution: “Art-First” UX & Lightweight WordPress Engineering

Step3 engineered a custom WordPress build centered around the concept of deliberate simplicity.

Intentionally Minimalist UI/UX

We stripped away superfluous graphic elements, choosing a clean, modern aesthetic with strong typography and generous whitespace. This minimalist approach allows the vibrant, thought-provoking imagery of Aimes’ installations to serve as the visual centerpiece on every screen.

Streamlined Information Architecture

We restructured how project case studies were formatted. By breaking down complex art concepts into scannable, visually guided narratives, visitors can instantly grasp the vision, execution, and impact of each experience.

High-Performance Media Handling

Immersive art websites rely heavily on large, high-resolution media. Step3 implemented advanced media compression, lazy loading, and lightweight frontend code to ensure that despite the visual richness, the website loads instantaneously across mobile and desktop devices.

Empowered Content Management

We built a flexible, intuitive editor in the backend, allowing the Aimes team to publish new exhibition media and project updates seamlessly without worrying about breaking page layouts.

The Impact & Results

What started as a simple request for bug fixes transformed into a long-term strategic partnership and a complete digital rebirth for the brand.

  • Clarity of Purpose: The new site successfully communicates the depth of Aimes’ work at a glance, turning casual visitors into engaged audiences.
  • Gallery-Grade Presentation: The minimalist design acts as a digital gallery space, elevating the perception of the brand for prospective partners, venues, and patrons.
  • Future-Proof Foundation: Built on a stable, high-performance WordPress framework, Aimes now has a reliable platform ready to scale alongside their upcoming installations and projects.
